NYX DRONE CHOIR
SARAH ANGLISS - Talk & performance
Tickets are available for individual events, but you can purchase a festival ticket for £25 below that will provide you with a code that will get you a 50% discount on any of and all of them.
01.06.19 - 2.30PM
Talk: Unheimlich manoeuvres - From ventriloquism to sound recording. From ventriloquism and the earliest sound recordings to fantasies of time travel, Sarah Angliss talks about the uncanny in folklore and popular culture that have inspired her music. She’ll be joined by Hugo, her roboticised ventriloquist’s dummy head, as she explores the peculiar relationship between performers and their 'knee pals’. This show will also include a live recording session on an original nineteenth century Edison phonograph.
01.06.19 - 7.30PM (Sarah + Stephen Hiscock)
An evening of electrical mysticism, as thereminist and inventor Sarah Angliss brings you dreamlike music, featuring her phantasmagoria of music machines. Angliss and her machines perform live with Stephen Hiscock, extemporising percussionist from Ensemble Bash. Robotic carillons, telephonic counterpoint and more are in the mix. Sarah will also introduce a pneumatic instrument, made from parts salvaged from an abandoned Welsh chapel organ!
NYX DRONE CHOIR + Support TBA
28.05.19 - 7.30PM
In the afternoon, the NYX Director will be working with some well-loved local female vocalists to prepare them for an evening performance not to be missed! Don't miss Catherine Wright, Jo Long, Vix Hobbs, Catherine Eliza Tarrant as you have never seen them before!
NYX is a collaborative choir and otherworldly electric chorus, re-embodying live electronics and extended vocal techniques - an experiential exploration of ambient, noise & electronic music, NYX makes ambient and ecstatic sonic landscapes, punctuated with acoustic glitching, polyphonic overtone and electric textures.
CATE FERRIS (Dizraeli & The Small Gods)
25.05.19, 2.30PM & 7.30PM
Cate's performances are a transfixing multi-layered musical voyage, delivered with haunting, 'goose-bumps-on-the-neck' vocals. Armed with a musical arsenal that includes guitar, flute and keyboard, Cate features old school technology in her performance such as a cassette recorder, megaphone and charity shop found electronic FX boxes. To this set-up she also adds samples of her own live playing and vocals, steadily building up intricate layers of rhythm, reverb and electronic chorusing that creates the illusion of an imaginary band echoing behind her.
In the afternoon, join Cate to have a go with her looping technology and get to know a little more about her creative process.
SANSHA (sharing the evening with Cate Ferris)
Up-and-coming Singer-Songwriter, Sansha, has self-produced over 50 electronic tracks. Live, she takes the audience through a whirlwind of emotions using guitar, piano, synthesiser and launchpad to deliver her unique songs with charismatic ease. She’ll catch you out with unexpected rhymes and sonorous tunes you won’t be able to stop singing afterwards.
This 'Victoria Wood meets Lilly Allen' hybrid also has a comedic routine to go alongside her songs, which comes from a love of storytelling. Her crafty song-writing and bell-like voice have earned her ‘track of the week’ and performances live on air on BBC three, BBC radio 6 and airplay on BBC radio one and bookings for the Montreux jazz festival, Ronnie Scott's, Latitude, Omeara, Edinburgh Fringe and Sofar Sounds sessions.
New York-born singer Raquel Peralta and Hampshire-born producer and instrumentalist Josh Childs make Bristol-based duo Stereo Kela. BBC Introducing South West picked up their tracks "State of Being", "Inventor", "Let Loose" and "I'm Fire" in 2018 and they are now working on their second album, Silver Bullet. Stereo Kela are the band to watch for unique dance music with a conscious message and old school flare.
"She stands barefoot, centre stage, a mini-goddess with a huge voice in asymmetrical body paint. Their sound is hard to pin down. Skimming disco, trance, and house, it’s undeniably electronic, but I also hear swing, reggae, and her operatic training."
Ethereal is the work of Swedish born Thai transgender solo artist Waritsara 'Yui' Karlberg. The stage name hints at the kind of music you can expect - ambient electronica combined with a 'haunting head voice' with shades of Anthony & The Johnsons/Anohni, London Grammar and Portishead.
Before Ethereal was signed to XYYX Records and released her critically acclaimed debut album, she dabbled in electronica with her good friend Billy Slipper and they played an unforgettable performance at Bristol’s O2 Academy for Mini Moon Festival which featured other amazing and talented oriental-related acts.
Well, a few years on that time has come round again and this time it’s happening in a lovely intimate Southampton venue called The Art House for the Femme Sequential Festival!!! A rare and exclusive performance you will NOT want to miss.
Other acts TBA
